Background of the study

Church sermons in Nigeria serve as a nexus of traditional values and contemporary religious practice. This study conducts a comparative analysis of the syntactic structures in Nigerian church sermons, focusing on influences from Yoruba and Igbo linguistic traditions. Nigerian church sermons often incorporate complex sentence constructions, rhetorical devices, and indigenous syntactic patterns that enhance persuasive communication and cultural resonance. By examining sermon transcripts from diverse congregations, the research aims to identify key syntactic features—such as clause embedding, parallelism, and repetition—that reflect the interplay between local languages and formal religious discourse (Obi, 2023). The analysis will also explore how these syntactic strategies contribute to the effective delivery of spiritual messages and the reinforcement of communal identity. Additionally, the study considers the role of code-switching and language mixing in sermons, which serve as adaptive mechanisms in a multilingual society (Chinwe, 2024; Afolabi, 2025). Ultimately, the study seeks to provide insights into how traditional syntactic elements can be maintained and adapted within modern church communication.

Statement of the problem

Despite the importance of church sermons in Nigerian religious and cultural life, there is limited comparative research on the syntactic structures that characterize these discourses. Variations between Yoruba and Igbo influences in sermon delivery remain underdocumented, hindering our understanding of how indigenous language practices shape religious communication (Obi, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

1. To identify key syntactic structures in church sermons.

2. To compare Yoruba and Igbo influences on sermon syntax.

3. To propose strategies for enhancing sermon effectiveness.

Research questions:

1. What are the dominant syntactic features in Nigerian church sermons?

2. How do Yoruba and Igbo syntactic patterns differ?

3. What are the implications for religious communication?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of syntactic structures in Nigerian church sermons, offering valuable insights for religious educators and linguists. The findings will support efforts to preserve indigenous language practices within formal religious settings and improve sermon delivery (Afolabi, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:

The study focuses solely on syntactic structures in Nigerian church sermons influenced by Yoruba and Igbo traditions.

Definitions of terms:

1. Syntactic Structures: The arrangement of words and phrases in sentences.

2. Church Sermons: Religious discourses delivered in a church setting.

3. Code-Switching: Alternating between languages in communication.
